Willard J. "Bill" Decker

Willard J. “Bill” or "Billy Joe" Decker, 79, of Norwich, died at University Hospital on Sunday, April 12, 2026 with his loving family by his side. Bill often shared this sentiment with others: that he wasn't leaving anyone behind- rather, he was just up there getting it ready for the rest of us.

Born on November 13, 1946, in Deposit, NY, Bill was a son of the late Willard “Bill” and Martha “Bonnie” (Bunsfield) Decker. After his graduation from Deposit Central School, Bill proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. While in the service, he served as a CH-53 Helicopter Mechanic, Door Gunner and Crew Chief with the Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462, 3rd Marine Air Wing, FMFPAC, RVN. He often shared that his squadron was known for flying some of the most dangerous missions and getting their brothers to safety; leaving no man behind. Bill also wrestled for the USMC and was selected "Marine of the Month" in May 1969. Bill completed SNCO Leadership and Drill Instructor School. Bill took great pride in being a Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Following his honorable discharge, Bill returned to Deposit where he was a mason and lumberjack for many years. He also spent several years logging and acting as a timber salesman for the Rawlings Baseball Bat Company.

Later in life, Bill owned and operated a bluestone quarry in Oxford, NY and was a very knowledgeable quarryman. Following that venture, Bill then opened his bluestone distribution company, Cozy Brook Bluestone with his longtime friend and business partner; George Wiley.

Bill enjoyed deer hunting with friends for many years. Making especially close bonds with hunters from downstate that then became his lifelong friends. Bill also enjoyed a good smoke, a cup of coffee, eating sweets and sharing stories and jokes with everyone he met. He had a love and passion for music and would often share his favorite songs with those that he loved; encouraging them to "listen to the lyrics". He had a warm and inviting presence, a memorable raspy voice and could make a friend in any crowd. He was well known for his mischievous smile, piercing bright blue eyes and Veterans baseball cap. Bill was also a skilled card player and enjoyed playing in tournaments at his local casino.

On June 17, 1978 Bill married Gloria “Scottie” Scott, who survives. He is also survived by his daughter, Kobie Natoli and her partner Ryan Hopping, of Minoa, NY; grandchildren Rhys Natoli and Hoyt Hopping who were the brightest stars of his life. Bill is also survived by many family members including his beloved nieces, nephews and their children. Bill was truly proud, to "be a Decker".

Bill was predeceased by his daughter, Casey R. Decker, on December 27, 2012. Her passing was one of his greatest losses. He was also predeceased by his loving parents and siblings Gary, David and Marsha. All of which he often shared memories and stories about to help keep their memories alive.

Friends and family are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home, in Norwich, on Saturday, April 18, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. with memory sharing to begin at 6:00 p.m.
