Walter P. “Walt” Schermerhorn, 79, of Norwich, died on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on April 9, 1946, in Norwich, NY, Walt was a son of the late Starr and Mary (Wright) Schermerhorn. He attended school in Norwich, graduated with the Class of 1964, and furthered his education earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Hartwick College. Walt began his extensive work history at Victory Markets, TACO in Sherburne in accounting, Sheffield products in accounting, and finally NBT Bank in payroll before his retirement.
He served as the City of Norwich Ward 4 Alderman for 12 years, volunteered for Holy Family School, Chenango County Council of the Arts finance committee, Little League, Big Brother/Big Sister, was the B-Team commissioner for Pop Warner football for 14 years, and was a secretary and score keeper for several Monday and Thursday golf leagues.
Walt was a huge Boston Red Sox fan, loved playing golf, was a former bowler, and enjoyed trips to the beach. Walt visited Myrtle Beach on several occasions and enjoyed spending eight years going to the Villages with his wife, and brother and sister-in-law. He always made time for his family and friends – especially playing cards with his buddies.
On April 30, 1966 in St. Paul’s Church in Norwich, Walt married Barbara McNeil.
In addition to his wife, Barbara Schermerhorn, of Norwich, Walt is survived by his daughter, Amy (Mark) Franklin, of Syracuse, NY; son, Matthew (Kathy) Schermerhorn, of West Seneca, NY; grandchildren, Megan Schermerhorn, Billy Schermerhorn, Connor Schermerhorn, and Blaine Franklin; sister, Mary Rose (Rick) Buss, of Raleigh, NC; nieces and nephews, Renee (Terry) Roberts, William (Riannon) McNeil, Sara (Jon) Rem, and Eric (Elizabeth) Buss; several great nieces and nephews; aunt, Beatrice (Wright) George, of Norwich; sister – in – law, Linda McNeil, of Hendersonville, NC; and several cousins. In addition to his parents, Walt was predeceased by his grandson, Brandon Franklin, in 2024 and his brother-in-law, Emerton “John” McNeil.
Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home, in Norwich, on Saturday, January 31, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. with a memorial service to immediately follow, officiated by Deacon David Kirsch.
