Robert J. Stanton

Robert J. “Bob” Stanton, formerly of Norwich, and more recently of Cortland, died at Gutherie Cortland Medical Center, on Monday, August 10, 2026.

Born on February 15, 1939, in Rock Rift, NY, Bob was a son of the late Robert W. and Charlotte (Hinkley) Stanton. He spent his childhood in the Rock Rift, NY and Walton, NY areas. In 1956, Bob entered the United States Army where he served honorably until his discharge in 1958.

After his time in the Army, Bob worked for a short time for New York State Electric and Gas until he began a long-time career as a construction worker for various jobs across New York State until his retirement in 1982. He was also a member of the Laborers' International Union of North America Local 17. During his life, Bob lived in the Norwich, Sidney, and Gilbertsville areas while he raised a family.

In his retirement, Bob and his wife, Joan, owned and operated Joan’s Cars and Collectibles as well as selling at local flea markets. He also enjoyed his racing coon dogs and the various activities he did with them including swimming and night hunts. For many years, Bob coached Pony League in Gilbertsville, was the Gilbertsville dog warden, and was a former member of the Gilbertsville Fire Department. He also enjoyed collecting sports cards and was a die-hard NY Yankees fan.

On February 1, 1957, Robert married Joan Bays, who predeceased him on May 14, 2007.

Robert is survived by his partner of eighteen years, Sherry Luchansky, of Cortland; children, Dianna (Dennis) Jones, of Adams Center, NY, Darlene (James) Hornsby, of San Antonio, TX, Bobbi Hookfin, of Indianapolis, IN, Robert (Robin) Stanton, of Sauquoit, NY, Cindy (Tim) Carroll, of Morris; twelve grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and brother, Ivan (Darlene) Stanton, of Walton, NY. In addition to his wife, Joan, Robert was predeceased by his daughter, Denise Stanton Larrabee; brother, Leland Stanton; and sister, Marcia Buchanan.

Friends and family are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery beginning at 1:00 p.m.
