Pearl E. Mundy, 101, a longtime Norwich resident died at Chase Memorial Nursing Home on Monday, May 8, 2023.
Pearl was born on August 30, 1921, in Oswego, NY, the oldest child of Harold and Amelia (Scott) Thompson. As a young child, her family moved to North Norwich where she worked on the family farm and helped to raise her siblings. She attended school in Norwich.
On June 23, 1940, she married Robert Mundy, who predeceased her on October 3, 1994. Together, they would have three children. Pearl was an avid bingo player appearing at all the local games, enjoyed her many social dinners at the family restaurant, the Ontario, and looked forward to her Coors Light at night. Pearl’s greatest joy and interest in life was being a grandma and made any reason to have a gathering. She will forever be known as “Grandma Mundy” by countless grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and all those who knew her.
Pearl is survived by her two children, Barbara (Thomas) Dixon, of Norwich, and Bonnie Hanyak, of Marcellus, NY; grandchildren, Brett (Michele) Wightman, Brenda (Steve) Schabel, Kim (Matt) Walczyk, and Cress (Michael) Perry; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Wightman, Brian (Tara) Wightman, Brandon (John) Wightman, Alex Walczyk, Arianna Walczyk, Garrett Perry, Bryce Perry, Max Schabel, and Luke Schabel; great-great-granddaughter, “Princess” Hayden Wightman; brother, Jim (Marilyn) Thompson; sister-in-laws, Louise Thompson and Cynthia Thompson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Richard Mundy; son-in-law, John Hanyak; and siblings; Harold, Hank, Robert and Betty.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Chase Memorial Nursing Home for the care given to Pearl.
A funeral service for Pearl will be held at the Wilson Funeral Home, at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2023, where Deacon David Kirsch will officiate. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
