Lawrence T. “Larry” Barkley, 71, of the New York State Veterans’ Home of Oxford, died on Monday, March 23, 2026 with family by his side.
Born on January 1, 1955, in Messena, NY, Lawrence was a son of the late Albert and Martha (Lashomb) Barkley. Following high school, Lawrence entered the United States Air Force serving from 1974-1984. While in the service, Larry and his family followed him from assignment to assignment. Succeeding his honorable discharge, Larry worked as a union electrician in Syracuse, NY.
For the past nine years, Larry was an active resident of the New York State Veterans’ Home in Oxford, NY. During his time there he made a lasting impression on those around him. He was a former council president for the residents of the Home and was on the food committee. Under his guidance, Larry helped implement many projects to benefit the staff and residents of the Veterans’ Home including establishing the coffee bar, creating a pavilion for staff, the construction of several nature trails, placement of the outdoor cannons, and forming the honor walk - where residents and staff line the hall when a member of the Veterans’ Home passes away, they are honored one last time.
Larry was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all. He enjoyed puzzles, playing poker, bowling, dancing, hiking, and camping – always ensuring the fire was started and continued to burn.
Larry is survived by his children, Lawrence Barkley, Jr, Hans (Heather) Barkley, Brandy Zacholl (Robert Zacholl), and Jason Lefler; grandchildren, Taylor Barkley, Jake Barkley, Zane Barkley, Noah Barkley, Gavin Barkley, Mya Barkley, Madison Zacholl, McKenna Zacholl, and RJ Zacholl; former wife, Crystal Senf; and siblings, Frank Barkley, Val Sinder, Michael Barkley, Gary Barkley, Julie Chapman, Dick Barkley, and Lisa Richards. He was predeceased by his brother, Wally Barkley.
The family wishes to thank the New York State Veterans’ Home for the wonderful care and support they received.
A Celebration of Life for Larry is scheduled June 7, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 13 County Route 45, Hastings, NY 13076.
Memorial contributions in memory of Larry may be made to Brandy Zacholl, 3073 Tulsa Avenue, North Port, FL, 34286. Please write “Lawrence Barkely” in the memo. Funds collected will be given to veterans in need at the Veterans’ Home in Oxford.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted with the Wilson Funeral Home.
