Jane Elizabeth Eaton passed away peacefully and comfortably in Sarasota, FL on August 16, 2022, at the age of 87. Jane was born October 15, 1934, in Syracuse, NY to Robert C. and Margaret “Daisy” (Cairns) Roberts. She grew up in Hamilton, NY and was a proud member of the Hamilton High School Class of 1952.
After graduating from Skidmore College, in 1956, she and first husband, Steve Siegel, embarked on a four-year Air Force ROTC adventure. They lived and worked at Air Bases in Harlingen, TX and Sacramento, CA. They returned to Hamilton in 1960 where their son Jeff was born.
Jane remarried in 1963 to Warren Eaton with whom she shared 32 happy years in Norwich, NY. Their lives together included a mutual love of golf, bowling, Norwich Purple Tornado and Colgate sporting events, Hobart College lacrosse games, dogs, and many friends and relatives with mutual interests. They consistently loved and supported the Norwich Community. Jane continued to love and support the community until her final days, and her family carries on this commitment.
Jane is remembered by many for her athleticism, humor, creative talents, and direct communication style. She is a member of the inaugural class of the golf Hall of Fame (2003 inductees) at the Canasawacta Country Club, in Norwich. At her hometown golf course, Seven Oaks Golf Club, in Hamilton, she won 14 Club Championships spanning five decades from 1967 to 2003.
In the 1980’s, Jane started a roughly 20-year stint working at the Mid-York Press, in Sherburne. This was the Roberts family business where she was proud to return and participate in the camaraderie, and witness the growth of the company and its positive impact in the community.
In recent years, Jane was very active with the golf community at The Oaks Club in Osprey, FL as she divided time between Norwich and Florida for more than 20 years. She also won several awards for weaving prize-winning Nantucket baskets, which was one of her hobbies during her later years in Florida.
Jane was predeceased by her husband, Warren; sisters, Polly Mahoney and Cynthia Tenney; and stepdaughter, Linda Eaton. She is survived by her son, Jeff Eaton, of Walnut Creek, CA; grandchildren, Kevin Eaton, of San Diego, CA, Kayla Jane Eaton, of Washington, DC, and Katia Eaton, of Austin, TX; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; stepdaughter, Elise Eaton, of Norwich; and stepson, David Eaton, of Oxford.
A memorial service for Jane will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, in Norwich, where the Rev. Steve White will officiate. A private burial will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery, in Norwich. There will be no calling hours.
