Francis P. “Bill” Maiurano, 90, a Norwich native, and longtime owner of Maiurano’s Flower Shop & Greenhouse, passed away on February 10, 2022, at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born on July 3, 1931, in Norwich, Bill was the son of Joseph and Catherine (Schecetano) Maiurano. He graduated from Norwich High School with the Class of 1951. Soon after graduation, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served honorably during the Korean War. On June 6, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia “Honey” (Yacano) Maiurano. Honey would follow Bill while he continued to serve in the Navy, after which they settled back in Norwich. Honey passed away on August 13, 2013.
After settling back in Norwich, Bill began working alongside his father, Joseph, at his father’s business, Maiurano’s Flower Shop & Greenhouse, which his father opened in 1930. Bill would assume ownership of the business in the 1950’s. Later, in the 1980’s, Bill and Honey would open Maiurano’s Country Christmas shop. During his career, and through his work and talents, Bill would bring joy to countless people in the community. For many nights, local residents would find the lights on in the greenhouses where Bill was busy at work. Maiurano’s Flower Shop & Greenhouse remains in business today and is operated by Bill’s daughter, Ginny.
Bill was an avid sports fan, bowling and playing football for Norwich High School. Also, he was on the bowling leagues at the Norwich Elks Club. He enjoyed watching his favorite teams, the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. Bill loved traveling with his family in their family station wagon to Disney World, in Florida, and spending time shopping with Honey in Binghamton. Every spring, Bill enjoyed planting and tending to his favorite vegetables: green beans, tomatoes, and peppers, just to name a few.
Bill is survived by the children he loved dearly, Francis “Frank” Maiurano Jr., Catherine “Cathy” Warner, Virginia “Ginny” (Robert) Allen, and Joseph Maiurano; grandchildren, Jennifer Palmer (Stephen Del Vecchio), David Allen, Rebecca “Becky” (Abdullah) Alhumayni, Maria Maiurano, Concetta Maiurano, and Virginia Maiurano; great-grandchildren, Katarina Palmer, Tristan Palmer, and Andrew Palmer; great-great-grandchild, Raeleen Palmer; family friend, Tony Loscavio; and his companion later in life, Laura Myers-Funk and their pets, Pee Wee “Peanuts,” Molly, Fluffy, and Finn “Fluffy.” Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. In addition, to his wife, Bill was predeceased by his ten siblings, Catherine “Kate,” Henry “Hank,” Grace, Joseph, Louis “Louie,” George “Stitch,” Bertha, John, Mary, Elizabeth “Liz,” and daughter-in-law, Cindi Maiurano.
