Clayton E. Barnes, 90, of Norwich, died on Friday, May 29, 2026 in the comfort of his home.
Born on May 25, 1936, in Norwich, Clayton was a son of the late Albert and Florence (Bennett) Barnes. Since his childhood, Clayton was a farmer on Polkville Hill in Norwich for his entire life. He also worked for the Town of Norwich Highway Department as a truck driver for ten years. In his leisure time, Clayton enjoyed playing pitch and card games, taking long car rides, and driving his red tractor. He always made time for his family and the many picnics on the farm.
On May 1, 1960, in Norwich, Clayton married Marion Kane, who predeceased him on April 24, 2017.
Clayton is survived by his sons, Gary (Connie) Barnes, of Norwich, and Bob (Christine) Barnes, of Norwich; grandchildren, Matt Barnes, Ashley (Greg) Kenyon, Megan (Chad) Montgomery, Kaylee (Cole) Johnston, Michael (Olivia) Barnes, Stephen Barnes, Mya Barnes, Jack Barnes, Donny Wood and Thomas Dickie, John Wood; great grandchildren, Abigail, Killian, Lux, Beck, Archer, Ariya, Ava, Mavrik, Emma, David, Walker, Maddie, Westlynn, and Graycen; and sister-in-law, Betty Barnes. He was predeceased by his brothers, Hubert, Richard, and Earl.
The family wishes to express gratitude to Cheryl Fairbanks for the care given to Clayton and to the team at Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County during the last few months.
Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home, in Norwich, on Thursday, June 4, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. with a funeral service to immediately follow, officiated by Rev. Peggi Eller. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Clayton’s memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 33-39 Court Street, Norwich, NY 13815.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted with the Wilson Funeral Home.
