Anthony "Nouch" Caputo

July 29, 1948 — January 23, 2023

Anthony J. “Nouch” Caputo, a lifelong Norwich resident, died peacefully surrounded by family in his childhood home on Monday, January 23, 2023.

Born on July 29, 1948, in Acquacalda, Italy, on the island of Lipari, Nouch was the son of Joseph and Elena Amelia (Merlino) Caputo. He graduated from Norwich High School in 1966 and then attended Hiram Scott College in Scottsbluff, Nebraska before earning a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Oneonta. Nouch worked for over twenty years as a substitute teacher in the Norwich City Schools before his career in four New York State correctional facilities. He was especially proud to say he was there to close down both Camp Pharsalia and Camp Georgetown. Nouch was a longtime bartender at both the Lido and Pecky Cypress Bluebird Lounge, both in Norwich, and was a regular clam shell opener at the Canasawacta Country Club.

Nouch sang and played bass in several local rock and roll bands in Norwich and had an extensive record collection. In 1984, Nouch bought a cottage at Chenango Lake which he cherished. There he loved to swim, fish, host parties, and just relax. An extensive traveler, Nouch went to Italy and Australia to see family, and even hitchhiked all the way to Florida from Norwich in his early years. He was an animal lover, including the two dogs he loved, Molly and Bentley. Nouch was a lifelong communicant of St. Bartholomew’s Church.

Nouch is survived by his wife, Susan (Walker) Caputo, of Norwich; son, Edmond Caputo (Ella MacDonald); siblings, Richard “Rick” (Dagny Gramstad) Caputo, of Norwich, and Grace Ann (Michael) Mooney, of Norwich; sisters-in-law, Kimberly Gaylord Caputo Hughes and Pina Caputo; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Jo Caputo, and brother, Edmond Caputo.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Nouch will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the Church of St. Bartholomew, where the Rev. Ralph A. Bove, will officiate. Burial will take place in the spring of 2023 at St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Monday, January 30, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Contributions in Nouch’s memory may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 E. Main St., Sidney, NY 13838, or to St. Bartholomew’s Church, 73 E. Main St., Norwich, NY 13815.
