Salvatore Mirabito

Salvatore J. “Sal” Mirabito, 77, of Norwich, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2015 at his home.

Born in Norwich on July 22, 1938, Sal was the son of James V. and Angelina (Sidote) Mirabito. He graduated from Norwich High School then served with the United States Army in Germany where he met his wife, Gayle. When he returned from Europe, he attended Ithaca College for a time before coming home to Norwich. He worked at the Norwich Knitting Mill and for his father at the Ontario Hotel before joining the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier. He retired in 2004 after 35 years in the postal service. He joined his wife in the antique business while still with the post office and following his retirement, he served for ten years for the Norwich Police Department as a crossing guard.

Sal enjoyed helping at the St. Bartholomew’s Soup Kitchen and also at the Paperback Exchange. He also helped at book sales at the Guernsey Memorial Library.

On February 20, 1964, in Ithaca, Sal married Gayle J. Petley. Gayle died in May of 2013. He is survived by his sons, Vincent J. Mirabito and his wife, Lisa, of Norwich and Stephen R. Mirabito, of Woodstock, NY; four grandchildren, Tara Jablonski and her husband, John, and Angelo, Alyssa and Vincent T. Mirabito; his great-grandchildren, Angelina, Abigail and Katie Jablonski as well as Isabella, Carlene, Jaina and Audrey Mirabito. He is also survived by his brother, Ronald J. “R.J.” Mirabito and two sisters, Katie Turner, of Oxford and JoAnne Testani and her husband, Nick, of Norwich. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Sal will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Friday, July 31, 2015 at St. Bartholomew’s Church with Rev. Ralph Bove, pastor, officiating. There will be a “gathering of family and friends” immediately following the Mass at the Msgr. Festa Parish Center. There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
