Margaret Stratton

February 12, 1922 — June 16, 2020

Margaret C. Stratton, a lifelong resident of Norwich, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2020. At her time of death, Margaret was a resident of the Chenango Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Facility. The Stratton family wishes to thank the staff of the facility for their outstanding care, treatment, and compassion throughout her tenure as a resident.

Margaret was born on February 12, 1922, in Norwich. Upon her graduation from Norwich High School, in 1939, she enrolled in the Binghamton, NY School of Business. Her work years included her contribution to a number of local businesses, including the Norwich Knitting Mill, Chenango County Offices, the Norwich City School District, Hart’s Electrical Service, and the City of Norwich. Her tenure with the city included her work with the Civil Service Commission, which she greatly enjoyed.

Margaret was married on September 1, 1947, to Robert R. Stratton at St. Paul’s Church, in Norwich. They were married 34 years until Robert’s death in January 1982. Although homemaking and raising her four children was her first priority, over the years Margaret also contributed her time and energy to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. She was also a literacy volunteer, and English language tutor, and spent many years donating much of her time to church activities, including Bingo and the sale of religious articles from her home. She enjoyed reading, sewing, Norwich history, and always had a vested interest in local, regional, and national issues. Most of all, Margaret enjoyed spending time with her family. Margaret was a beautiful soul with an unwavering faith. She believed in the power of prayer and prayed the Rosary daily.

Margaret is survived by her son, Edwin and his wife, Lisa, of Oxford, NY, and their children, Paul, Rhett, Andrew, Joseph, and Maria; son, Richard and his wife, Debbie, of Marlton, NJ; son Peter and his wife, Monica, of Syracuse, NY, and their children, Catherine, Daniel, and Meghan; daughter Linda, of Somersworth, NH, whose husband, Tucker, passed away in 2018, and their children, Amy and Matthew. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Samuel, Elle, Benjamin, and Patrick. Margaret also leaves behind one brother, John Patrick Conroy, of Cincinnati, OH, who was predeceased by his wife, Margaret. She was predeceased by her parents, Nellie (Scanlon) Conroy and Francis D. Conroy Sr., as well as five of her six brothers and their spouses, Edwin, Francis D. Jr. (Betty), James (Mary), William (Florence), and Robert (Kathleen).

A private Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at St. Paul’s Church. Burial will immediately follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Monday, June 22, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. To ensure the safety of all in attendance, please observe appropriate social distancing and sanitary practices.
