James R. “Jim” Currie, Jr., 75, of Norwich, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of July 23, 2023.
Jim was born in Herkimer, NY on September 5, 1947 to the late Marie (Manion) and James R. Currie, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Bonney (Campbell) Currie, the love of his life; four sons and loving daughters-in-laws, James (Amanda Nichols), Christopher (Lisa), Daniel (Jenica), and Timothy (Jennifer); and grandchildren, Emmit, Lily, Frances, and Oscar. He is also survived by brothers, Patrick (Gina) and Thomas (Amanda); sisters, Sue McDermott (Ray) and Bridgette Heickman (Gordon); sister-in-law, Mary Currie, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Stephen.
Jim served in the US Marine Corps from 1966-1969, serving in Vietnam from 1968-69 with an honorable discharge. He was a member of the American Legion Post 189 in Norwich and the VFW Post 3911 in Key West, FL. He served on the Norwich Family YMCA Board of Directors from 2010-2020 and as Board President from 2012-2013, was a Cub Scout leader from 1975-1988, was Board Chair of the Chenango United Way, served on the board of the Chenango County Chamber of Commerce and was elected to the Norwich City School Board from 1987-1988. In 2015, Jim received the Harry Tecklenburg Award in recognition for making a positive impact on the Chenango County Community.
He began his telephone career at Bell Telephone in 1969-1973 and continued with Contel, GTE, Citizens, ChoiceOne, and finally Frontier, where he retired as Vice-President of Operations in 2015. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, civic-mindedness and love of family and friends.
Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home, in Norwich, on Friday, July 28, 2023 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. with a memorial service to immediately follow.
