George R. Whiting

April 22, 1938 — April 28, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George R. Whiting, who departed this world on April 28, 2023. He was 85 years old, having just celebrated his birthday on the 22nd.

George was born in Peckville, PA, to Harold and Clara (Hartman) Whiting. He was the youngest of five children and a descendant of railroad workers from the O&W line. George was proud of his heritage and loved trains. He was a master tinkerer and could seemingly fix anything broken.

After receiving his honorable discharge from the Army, George made his way to Norwich, NY in search of work. There he met Joan, his wife of 57 years. Together, they built their home and raised their family. He retired from Unison after 39 years as an assembly technician.

George was known for his kind heart, quiet manners, and notorious dad jokes. Most of all, he was known for his "servant's heart." It was not uncommon for George to stop whatever he was doing to make sure that the people around him were cared for and had all they needed. He was a prominent fixture and founding member at Living Word Christian Center in Greene, NY, serving as an usher and deacon. He considered the church membership to be like his extended family.

George has reunited with his mother and father; brothers, Robert and Paul; and sisters, Katherine (Pierce) and Patricia (Warner). He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Joan (Famolaro) Whiting; children and their spouses, Christine (Rick) Towner, Carol (Eric) Lyons, and Ronald (Lisa) Whiting; grandchildren, Candace (Hector), Dylan, Caleb, Ashley, Sianna, Samantha, Cheyanne, Thomas, Ashlyn, and Shalyn; great-grandchildren; nephews, and nieces. We will all miss him, forever holding him in our hearts.

Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home, in Norwich, on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. with a memorial service to immediately follow, where Pastors Joshua Kiefer and Mark Wilkins will officiate.
