June 30, 1921 — February 13, 2017

Anthony A. Magistro, 95, a lifelong resident of Norwich, passed away on February 13, 2017 at a hospital in Zephyrhills, FL.

Born June 30, 1921, Anthony was the son of Angelo and Nunziata (Saltalamacchia) Magistro. After graduating from Norwich High School, Anthony worked for a brief time at Norwich Pharmaceutical Company before enlisting in the US Army Air Force to serve in the World War II war effort. Anthony was stationed in India and repaired US aircraft there that were damaged in battle. After being honorably discharged, Anthony enrolled in the automotive technology program at Morrisville Technical college. Following his graduation from Morrisville he began working for Ryan Motors of Norwich as an auto mechanic before joining Scintilla of Sidney, where he finished a 35-year career as a machinist.

On January 25, 1947, at the Church of St. Paul, Anthony married Ellen (Diefenbacher) Magistro, who died in 2013. Together they would spend many years together enjoying their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and spending winters in Florida after their retirement.

Anthony was an active member of the local American Legion and VFW posts, and was also a member of the Elks Club. After his retirement, he began playing golf, a game he came to love. Throughout his years of golf, Anthony made three holes-in-one. He golfed until age 94. He was also an avid gardener, and was fond of fishing.

Anthony is survived by his children Anthony Magistro Jr. and his wife, Madelyn, of Norwich, Robert Magistro, of Norwich, Charles Magistro and his wife, Kay, of Ottawa, IL, and Margaret Magistro, of Norwich; sister-in-law Josephine Diefenbacher; brother-in-law Charles Diefenbacher; several nieces and nephews, six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by an infant son, David, and siblings Jenerine, Rosario “Charles”, Angelo “Buff”, Joseph “Pep”, Vincenzo “James”, Mary, Rose, Nunziata, and Nicola.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 9, 2017, at the Church of St. Bartholomew, where the Rev. Ralph A. Bove, pastor, will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery. There will no calling hours.
